Film and poster Analysis

Key conventions of this Frozen Poster:
  1. Central image
  2. Release date
  3. Colour scheme
  4. Title
  5. institutional logo and details
This attracts the audience as the first line at the top of the poster says, "From the creators of 'Tangled' and 'Wreck it Ralph'" which would appeal to audiences who also like Disney, animated movie with excitement as it is about the same genre which viewers of 'Tangled' AND 'Wreck It Ralph' have already liked which would give the movie 'Frozen' a similar audience too.

Also the fact that the central image has not only the perfect idea of a princess but also animated animals, snowman and a Moose which would also attract viewers as it is atypical christmas fun movie to watch.

Key conventions of this Frozen trailer:
  1. Short clips of the movie
  2. Fast paced editing
  3. Text on screen
  4. Title and release date
  5. Institutional logo and details
This attracts the viewers as the short clips of the movie gives thrill and excitement to the viewers as it is going very fast with action and many different characters being shown with their names, also, it is set around December- regarding the snow and the ice with warm jackets and winter wear - this would excite their target audience (mainly young children) as most young children like snow and cold weather and building snowmen which is what the movie "Frozen" advertises.

Also, this movie attracts an audience as it is animated with comedy which would be suitable for all ages (a family movie) due to the storyline that is portrayed: something going wrong and someone else trying to fix it but (obviously) there is conflict whilst trying to solve it.

I think the trailer successfully promotes the movie, 'Frozen' more than the poster as the trailer gives you an insight of the movie more as it gives you dialogue and an introduction to the characters with the text on the screen which gives the viewers a "sneak peak" of who they are going to see. Also, the trailer has more key conventions than the movie poster as the movie poster doesn't include an age certificate or a production blurb which most successful posters have which- clearly - doesn't make this less of a successful poster but it would be even better if it included these things.

Ouija 2014
Genre
Horror

Narrative
From the trailer it shows that a girl died in a house and her friends are trying to get in contact with her. Obviously there are loads of problems that happen during the process

Characters
The characters are young american men and women (probably 19-21) The victim of the death; vulnerable, young, female. The best-friend who wants to get in contact with her; american, also female, young, brave, and willing to get in contact her no matter what the obstacles are.

Iconography
In this trailer there are plenty of iconography regarding to a horror such as; Orchestra music (violins), loud sound effects (door creaking, footsteps), death, vulnerable young women and men, jump scares, paranormal activity and injuries.

Setting
Due to the trailer it is clear that this movie was set in America (the house where the paranormal activity happens) due to their accents and the type of scenery such as the diner's and the roads which suggests it is a horror as the house it 'haunted' looking.

Think Like a Man

Genre
Rom-Com

Narrative
The story line - only based on the trailer - is identifying typical stereotypes of women and men due to Steve Harvey's book which helps women, and men, defeat the typical routine and ways that they have and do.

Characters
The characters are stereotypes of men; Player (good body, good looking and fairyl young), mummy's boy (successful, attactched to their mums), happily married man (35-40 years old, socially detatched), happier divorced man (middle aged, partier, direspectful, Dreamer (good looking, single, unemplyed) and the non Commiter (immature, young), and pretty women.

Iconography
Romance, an argument or conflict to break the couple up, best friends of both genders, a common interest of the men (club and basketball), something which brings the couples back together.

Setting
Think Like a Man is set in LA due to the roads and accents of the actresses and actors.

Assignment 1 feedback learner response

Tutorial:
- Planning documents complete
- Need an original title
- Work on colour scheme
-Make sure cover lines are consistent in design and text (all upper/ lower case)
- Main flash needs to be much bigger

To make sure these standards are met I am going to choose a different title from my planning sheet. Also in order to come up with a unisex colour scheme I am going to use the "I" from the independent newspaper and choose a complementary colour which goes with the "I". To make the cover lines consistent I am going to use all upper case and for the main flash I'm going to put a decent outline to show that it is a main flash.

Shot by shot

Shot One:
Medium Close up (MCU)
The medium close up allows the audience to vaguely see the facial expressions of the characters along with the background to see other characters and establish where the scene has been located. The faces of the characters portray the emotion of anger or shock. The surroundings that the audience is able to see portrays the idea that they are enclosed and trying to catch someone or something - Tom Cruise - Also it Dowd us that they are in some sort of danger add they are wearing helmets which is visible due to the type of close up - medium close up.

Shot Two:
Establishing shot (ES)/ Long Shot(LS)
The establishing shot enables the audience to understand the location of the scene which is a car surrounded by many buildings however this could also be a long shot as it is close enough to 'tell' the audience that the focus is on the car. The bright light you can see on a specific section of the building and the rest of the  building is quite dim, which shows that where the car is, is enclosed which many people can't enter or see very easily. This shot made the audience question where specifically the car is parked.

Shot Three:
Close up (CU)
The close up allows the audience to witness the characters facial expressions and emotion which seems to be unsure or uncertain. This is showing one aspect of the character which his his face. As the audience - due to the type of shot - can only see the face of the main character it shows that the character is trapped by many people or an obstruction.

Camera Shot

.
Establishing shot:
Sets the scene.

Long Shot:
This allows the audience know
 who the main character is
within the scene

(Also) Long Shot:
The main character is
focused to show the
scene and the start of the
main storyline.

Over the shoulder shot:
This allows the audience
to see there is a conversation
occurring between the two
main characters, also, the
fact one face is visible out of
the two, it shows who the
focus is on and the facial
expression shown during
the conversation.

Long shot and low angle:
This was used to express
how powerful this character
is portrayed to look.

Medium shot and high angle:
Shows what the opposite
character looks like through
the powerful characters point
of view (small and weak).

Two shot:

Fruit bowl

The task
Our task today was to first make a simple colour palette of the colours we wanted for example we had a selection of:
  • Vibrant
  • Winter
  • Autumn
  • Fresh
  • Pastel
  • Skin Tone
  • Urban
For my personal colour palette I chose to make a palette of autumn and vibrant.
After this we were told to use the eyedropper tool to fill in a plain fruit bowl using a picture from Google to represent what theme we picked, I picked vibrant and pastel.
For my Pastel fruit bowl I used the picture I had taken the colours from in my fruit bowl.
I have included the majority of the key conventions which are, a bright picture with loads of vibrant colours however my fruitbowl looks too dull to be a vibrant fruit bowl. It looks like I have chosen the full colours to the bright, vibrant ones, which is something I will consider.

Media Language
The first key convention that shows the audience that this is a Nike advert is the clear Nike logo (the tick) shown on the centre at the bottom. Also the hash-tag "Make it count"- tells the audience that Nike is important and that they put effort into they're sportswear due to the caption. They have chosen a gold Olympic medallist, Mo Farah. Mo Farah was specifically chosen due to him being a famous Olympic star for 1500m who loads of sports fans look up to and like, so putting him on the poster makes him look powerful and important which is how people would people would look at him as. Also the fact that he is looking serious towards the camera demonstrates how serious Nike want to portray themselves as. The grey-scale effect that Nike have used for this advert makes you focus on Mo Farah and his facial expression, also the clothes (Nike) that he is advertising. The light that is being shone onto Mo Farah shows his muscles and how hard he has worked in order to get it (determination). The text also links to Mo Farah's face as he is a significant person for training and working hard for his dream (which is becoming an Olympic medallist) which he has achieved.

Institution
The main institution for this advert is Nike which has competition to other sportswear companies such as Adidas. The hash-tag "#MAKEITCOUNT" to show that they are making it count by being better than the Adidas brand. Nike is successful due to the competition and making they're clothing and shoewear better than Adidas' due to them both being a worldwide institution.

Audience
The target Audience for this advert is primarily sports fans. Nike attracts both genders (female 50/ male 50) due to the wide range of items of clothing and shoewear they sell. The age range would most likely be 13/14- 35 as they would be the person buying the product, mainly middle-class people due to the expense of the products Nike sell.

Representation
The representation for this advert us exclusively young and fit - which would revert back to the target audience as to be able to buy Nike's sportswear you would have to be young and fit. This is also quite shocking as there are obviously many buyers who are not young and/or fit which Nike doesn't portray on their advert instead they have Mo Farah who isn't exactly old and he is fit which would give the impression.

HSBC Adverts

Explanation

I interpreted the word 'family' into three different pictures: a picture of a family reading together; A basketball team playing a match and lastly a picture of a gang with their hoods up in the dark.

  • I thought a picture of a family reading together represents 'family' because its a family.
  • I also thought a picture of a basketball team (Chicago Bulls) represented 'family' because they train together all day and have to act like a family in order to be in thr same team as each other which means they have
I have considered what is needed for this HSBC advert and I have considered the key conventions. However, to make this look professional I would have needed better pictures, obviously the same idea of the pictures but just higher quality. For example the real HSBC looks like this:
This looks more professional due to the type of text and the pictures all have completely contrasting pictures as they all include completely different colours.

Thursday 3 July 2014

1) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?
Greenford news story: The new Year 11 Video has been released
National news story: Mobile phone operators could be made to share their networks with rural areas of the UK
London news story: The Met police told staff to delete records on sex and race discrimination against 35 year old Carol Howard.
Sports news story: Barcelona begun the discussions with Liverpool over a deal for striker Luis Suarez
Funny news story: A hungry bear managed to get his head stuck in a Cookie jar

2) For each story above, explain WHY you chose that particular story and not something else. Why would it interest a Greenford audience?
Greenford news story: We chose this story because…it is something the whole of Greenford High school (students and teachers) would enjoy and would want to talk about unlike the sports day which would only appeal to some teachers who are in years 7-9 and students in years 7-9
National news story: We chose this story because…it would start discussion between everyone on whether they would like or agree with the fact that they would want it. Which would involve all students.
London news story: We chose this story because…its something that students are most likely to do (discriminate against someone due to their race or sex) especially considering our audience is Greenford High School students and teachers
Sports news story: We chose this story because…Suarez is a very famous player, who is currently playing in the World Cup so updates about him would have been effective to use in the 60 news for Greenford high school.
Funny news story: We chose this story because… it is something quite pointless to add to such a factual 60 update which makes it funny to include.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?
  1. National News story
  2. London News Story
  3. Sports News Story
  4. Greenford News Story
  5. Funny News Story
We put the stories in this order because it starts very open to whoever wants to concentrate to more personal which would keep them watching it for longer, especially to end with something funny.
Now think about your writing, editing, broadcasting and group work.

4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?
We made sure the script was the right length by timing each time Shivam said the script, to make sure it was 60 seconds.

5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?
We made sure each story was clear and easy to understand by using language which would be understood by teachers but also be appealing to students. Also, we summarised each article and rephrased it so it was easy to understand.

6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?
We made sure the broadcast was professional by using a range of language such as an introduction of himself at the beginning and body language that shivam (the news reader: performer) used.

7) What was your specific role in the group?
My role within the group was the journalist so I had to write up the script of what the performer was going to say.

8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)
Considering that our group worked well together and delegating different jobs for each person, so on a scale of one to 5 I genuinely think we worked at a 4/5.

9) How could your group have worked more effectively as a team?
My work could have worked more effectively by communicating better within the group; the whole of the group.

10) Finally, what would you have done differently if you were given the opportunity to do this again?
If I had the chance to repeat the project we did I would manage the time better as we went over time and didn't manage to record our final piece in the first double period. Other than this I think we worked effectively as a group.

Textual Analysis

Genre
The Genre for this media text is a Television trailer. The sub-genre would be advertisement of the TV drama and rom-com; Youngers.

Audience
The target audience for this television trailer would be British viewers as the theme of the television drama is set in Britain. This would amuse mainly teenagers: students (aged 13-16) due to the language they speak and the way in which they act, boys and girls would be amused by this drama due to the lifestyles they have of the main characters, however this would appeal to girls more than girls as the romance that occurs during the trailer. This would also appeal to music lovers as the drama is based around making and performing music in order to get signed.

Platform
Besides this being a TV advert there are also many other ways in which to see this advert such as YouTube on the computer, phone, tablet or laptop. Many edited clips are shown on TV but to watch the full trailer for more of an insight you could access it through YouTube. As the main audience is teenagers and students the main device would be Phones, tablets or laptop.

Genre
The Genre for this media text is a Music Video. The sub genre for this media text is pop and R'n'B music.

Audience
The target audience for this Pop and R'n'B music video is 12 to 50 years old. Also, this would be appealing to dancers as it is R'n'B and pop music (with a good beat) which would make it easier to choreograph to which is what dancers look for in music. Beyonce and music fans also would be appealed to watch this due to it being music by Beyoncé. Mainly girls would listen to this as more girls are fans of Beyoncé.

Platform
This music video can be watched on YouTube (accessing it from a phone, tablet, Computer or a laptop) Also this could be seen on Tv: Music channels.

Genre
This media text is a TV advert. The sub-genre would be sport and fitness advertisement due to the advert advertising Nike. However as this advert I'd an extended advert it is less likely for it to be shown on the TV.

Audience
The target audience for this Nike advert is women: young women, teenagers aged 13- 25 due to the voices and actresses who were shown in the advert. This would appeal mainly to sport players from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. However as Nike is a global brand this advert would appeal to males also as they are referring to how males treated female sport players.

Platform
Besides this being an advert, the extended version makes it less likely for the whole advert to be shown on TV (only edited cuts would be shown on TV). However, you could watch this on YouTube by accessing it through your phone, tablet, laptop or computer. With a younger target audience this would mainly be assessed through a phone or a tablet.

Wednesday 25 June 2014

Why did you choose GCSE Media Studies?
I chose GCSE media Studies because I'm interested in media and TV and it was recommended by a friend when I helped her with her Media Music Video
Which part of the course are you looking forward to most?
I am looking forward to the Music Video the most because it’s the most creative part of the GCSE media course.
What knowledge and skills do you hope to learn in Media?
I hope to learn skills such as using Photoshop, gaining analytical skills and knowledge on how to use a camera in different ways.
What grade are you realistically hoping to achieve in Media?
I'm aiming to achieve at least an A/B this year.
What was the last TV programme or film you watched?
The last film I watched was ‘Love and Basketball’. This movie was very romantic yet had elements of sports, besides it being an old movie it was enjoyable.
Why do you think that TV programme or film appealed to an audience?
I think Love and Basketball appeals to an audience (mainly young sports players of both genders) because it is about sport and romance which some audiences find appealing to watch. Also the language that it used appeals to a certain audience which makes it enjoyable for them.
What technology have you used to access the media in the last 24 hours? (Radio, TV, phone etc.)
I have used my phone (mainly), watched the TV, used my tablet and I've been on the computer.
What device do you use most to access the media?
I use my phone the most to access the media because it is always on me wherever I go which makes it easier to access the media.
What is the main news story on the BBC News website currently? Why do you think it is the main story?
The main story on the BBC News website is the article about campaigners losing the right to die. I think this is the main story on this website as it is very important as many people should have the right to die and unfortunately they have lost the right to do so.
What is the main news story on the Guardian website (guardian.co.uk) currently? Why do you think it is the main story?
The main news story on the Guardian is Updates about the world cup. I think this is the main story on the guardian website because loads of people watch the world cups and want updates on ones that they possibly haven’t seen so it is the top story because loads of people are interested in it.
